Both men and women often are dissatisfied with the shape and size of their tummies. Whilst most media attention has been directed towards liposuction to re-shape the abdomen, abdominoplasty or the "tummy tuck" operation remains the correct surgical solution for excess skin and weak muscles in the abdominal area. A procedure called an abdominal lipectomy also removes excess fat from the region, and some people who are thin and athletic but have a tummy which sticks out may just require a "mini-tuck". The procedure which is right for you will be decided at the time of consultation.
The three main causes of wrinkling and bulging of the abdominal region are pregnancy, weight gain or loss, and age. Abdominoplasty re-shapes the tummy region by removing the excess skin and tightening the muscles, while abdominal lipectomy removes the excess fat. Some stretch marks on the abdomen may also be removed or reduced at the time of operation.
Abdominoplasty is performed under general anaesthetic where an incision is made in the lower abdomen and upper thigh region, the so called "bikini line". The skin is then lifted and excess fat eliminated and the abdominal muscles tightened. In women where the rectus abdominus muscle has split during pregnancy, this will be repaired.
In general, people spend 2-3 days in hosptial and there is some discomfort for the next 10-14 days. Most people take 2-3 weeks off work. Vigorous acitivity cannot be resumed for 6 weeks.
